“What’d you find out?” Holly asked several hours later, after Bobby and Dusty had been settled for the night in the second double bed in Ben’s room.

“Nothing yet. I called a friend who is going to run a check for runaways and missing persons. I took Bobby’s picture with my cell phone when he wasn’t looking and forwarded it to him. He said he’d e-mail me anything he could find. We should know something by morning. In the meantime, we need to see if we can find out anything more about him. If we don’t have any answers by morning, we’ll continue toward Phoenix. It’s a long drive; maybe he’ll relax and spill something we can use to identify him.”

“He said his parents were killed in an automobile accident a couple of months ago,” Holly informed him.

“He might be lying. If he doesn’t want us to try to find them, he might have made up the whole story.”

“I don’t think so. He was pretty choked up when he told me about it. Maybe he ended up in the foster-care system and he’s running away from his foster home.”

“Maybe, but where’s he running to? Why Phoenix?” Ben ran his hand through his hair, fatigue evident on his face.

“I don’t know. Did you look through his bag? There might be a clue inside.”

“Yeah, while he was in the bathtub. Nothing in it but a change of clothes equally as dirty as the one he was wearing, a toothbrush and a tube of toothpaste, and a crumpled-up picture of a young girl. I doubt she’s older than he is.”

“A sister?”

“Maybe. There’s a definite resemblance. Right now, I’m going to go out and see if there are any stores open where I can get him some new clothes. The ones he has have definitely seen better days. Will you keep an eye on him?” Ben asked.

“No problem. Poor little guy. I hope we find his family, and I hope they’re worth finding. Not all families are, you know.”

“Unfortunately, I do.”
